I'm absolutely familiar with them, the Pax Bellum design has been around for a while. Maybe a few others who have used these will chime in with their experiences.

From what I've been able to gather, they are hit or miss. Results tend to be all over the board.

I would place them in the middle of the pack in general, possibly in the upper half for the manufactured versions.

For the DIY versions, again these will tend to me even more varied due to the nature of DIY - buy the cheapest thing that can get the job done. There are hundreds of threads for DIY algae reactors. Almost all of these involve taking a cheap tape-style LED light strip and wrapping them around an acrylic tube reactor like a TLF or Avast one.

What it comes down to is really preference, and what works for you. If you like growing chaeto, and are able to grow it well already, then it will probably work, but that's not a guarantee - I've seen examples where someone says they can grow chaeto like crazy in a sump/fuge but not in a reactor.

I've also read some shockingly bad experiences from some users of the big name-brand manufacturers (when contacting customer service, that is)
