I am going to upgrade my algae scrubber (waterfall) to a wider screen ~ 11". I am looking for a pump for head pressure of about 2 feet. Which pump should be better? Jebao? I would like to go with Jebao as i will use hard pvc and the outlet is threaded so it will be easier to connecy. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SQX5CEW/ref=twister_B00SQX5CFG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Or a rio? if Rio then which model? Any thoughts appreciated thanks
Some pumps have poor head loss properties, but these are usually the MJ and Cobalt type pumps - pumps that were designed as power heads or reactor supply pumps, not return pumps. Anything with a larger diameter magnet, like the Rio 1100 and up or most of the DC motors out there, are going to meet the minimum after head loss because they have a stronger overall resistance to head pressure. Add up your head losses and find a pump that will deliver at least 300 GPH and you're good. 400 GPH and your more than good. For reference: your vertical head is distance from the top of the water to the slot pipe (not including the depth of water the pump is sitting in - this does not matter) Horizontal head, I don't factor this in. Elbows do matter however, and there is a resistance factor for the slot pipe, but what I do to simply everything besides the vertical is equate this to 24" of vertical head. That gets you close. So in your example, if you have 24" of actual vertical head, your equivalent head is 48" HTH Bud
thanks Turbo.. so will take the 48" as my head. I have another monster pump (Jebao DCT8000) that is an overkill unless i put a ball valve to scrubber and tee the excess to the sump
