The latest project by ENST's Dr. Patrick Kangas and Biohabitats' Dr. Peter May, a water filtration system using Algal Turf Scrubber™ (ATS) technology, has been gaining recognition in the environmental science community. The project recently won big at the Chesapeake Stormwater Network’s Best Urban BMP (Best Management Practice) on the Bay Awards, affectionately known as the BUBBAs. The BUBBA is awarded to the most efficient and viable ways of managing the water quality of the Chesapeake area. - See more at: http://www.enst.umd.edu/news/algal-turf-scrubber-wins-bubba#sthash.lSosOMoZ.dpuf http://www.enst.umd.edu/news/algal-turf-scrubber-wins-bubba
A few more links to this award, and the PDF (attached) Double-Win “Algal Turf Scrubbers” Help to Clean Up Baltimore Harbor and Fuel Cars on Environmental XPRT 2014 BUBBAs Winners | Chesapeake Stormwater Network What I find interesting about one of the pics in the PDF is that they are not growing true "Turf" - they are growing GHA, that's what's shown in those pics. this makes sense though since the "turf" algae I think is primarily saltwater, and freshwater algae (in scrubbers) is this fine hair-like growth.
