    I had a DIY overflow pipe for a long time and if you do not design it for the correct flow rate you will be a the mercy of micro-bubbles! Micro-bubbles always seemed to build up in my DIY siphon and since the system is typically built out of white PVC you cannot see the air build up inside! After I got my eshopps overflow box and an pump that provided the appropriate flow for that over flow box, my tank chemistry has balanced out and the overflow does not build up with micro-bubbles.

    Long story short, you need to make sure the flow inside your DIY overflow is fast enough to overcome these micro-bubbles!
