I found an interesting online book:

Pond Fertilization: Ecological Approach and Practical Applications
    By Christopher F. Knud-Hansen

    You can find it here:

    http://pdacrsp.oregonstate.edu/pubs/fertguide_PDF/fert_guide_TOC.html

The book is about growing algae for aquaculture. The book looks thoroughly sourced.

    The third chapter:

I found most interesting as it concerns how P, N, and C are cycled through the system and its interactions with algae. Very interesting was how algal growth significantly affects water quality both good and bad (as far as the fish are concerned).
